The most common injuries due to hard ground are:
▪️ Concussion
▪️ Splints
▪️ Tendon Injuries
▪️ Bruised Soles
▪️ Sore Shins
▪️ Laminitis (due to concussion damaging the Laminae)
So, the question is how can you reduce these injuries?🧐
Make sure your horse is fit for the work your asking them to do, your training regime is nice and varied if possible, such as going up and down hills, working on soft and hard ground and varied terrain will all load your horse’s musculoskeletal system differently.
You can apply cooling gel or clay which both have a cooling effect on the horse's sensitive legs. The cooling clay & gel for horses can be used for bruises, swelling, and inflammations or simply as a preventive measure after a hard workout. Cold hosing and ice wraps will also help reduce inflammation, walk your horse off until they have completely cooled down. Remember, the cool down is as important as the warm up.
